Chapter Seven

Cold metal jabbed into Matt’s chin and forced his eyes open before his brain truly engaged. Ella, still naked and pressed to his side, let out a squeal of alarm as a strange voice intruded. It took him three solid seconds to interpret the words of the question.

“What in the fucking hell are you doing in bed naked with my daughter?” came the angry, disbelieving query from the shotgun’s owner. The sudden shove of the gun now abrading his chin didn’t make Matt want to answer the angry man’s question. And he probably didn’t have the ability anyway. He’d never claimed to be a morning person.

Eyes now open wide, Matt took in the dire situation quickly. The sun wasn’t up yet, but four men stood around the edge of the bed. One of the men held a lantern bright enough to fill the room as though it was noon.

Another jab of the gun to his already abraded chin. “I asked you a question.”

Matt blinked and pushed the gun away from his face. Colton sat up, also pushing the gun pressed to his forehead aside like it was an annoying toy. It was fairly easy to size up the situation.

He recognized the Stevenson brothers by their girth alone. The grizzled, gun-wielding old man near his side of the bed was obviously Ella’s father. The preacher at the foot of the bed holding the lantern closed his eyes and backed against the wall. Perhaps he realized they truly were all buck naked beneath the quilt.

“Do you really want me to say it out loud?” he said with as much sarcasm as he could muster.

“Never knew you was such a whore, Ella,” Owen Stevenson said with a sneer.

Matt never knew Colton could move so fast, but in a flash worthy of being called lightning speed, one of his hands was around the grip of the shotgun and the other was around Owen’s fat, jowly neck.

“Take that back and say you’re sorry.” Colton tightened his grip around Owen’s throat.

The preacher stepped forward suddenly and opened his eyes but kept them averted from the bed. “I believe we should adjourn to the other room and let the three of them get dressed before we have a further discussion.”

Colton didn’t seem to care whether he was dressed or not but loosened his grip on Owen’s throat and took a seemingly reluctant step back. He kept the gun, pulling it from Owen’s grasp as the big man moved away rubbing his throat.

The four intruders shuffled out to the living space. Colton slammed the door behind them and leaned the gun against the wall. “What the fuck are they doing here already?” he whispered furiously. “They had to have traveled in the dark and the better part of the night to arrive by now.”

“Foolish, that’s for certain.” Matt jumped out of bed and pulled his clothing on as fast as possible. Ella remained seated in the center of the bed with the sheet and quilt pulled to her neck.
